My wife, Aurelia, a world-famous cellist, died four days after giving birth to our twins, Mateo and Samuel. The doctors called it a “postpartum complication”—one of those explanations that explains absolutely nothing.

I was left alone in a fifty-million-dollar glass mansion in Seattle, with two newborns and a grief so thick that breathing felt like drowning.

Samuel was strong and quiet. Mateo was not. His crying was shrill, rhythmic, and desperate—like an alarm that never turned off. His tiny body would tense up, his eyes rolling back in a way that froze my blood.

The specialist, Dr. Adrian Vela, dismissed it as “colic.”

My sister-in-law, Clara, had another theory. She claimed it was my fault, that I was emotionally distant, and that the boys needed a “proper family environment.” In reality, what she wanted was control of the Blackwood Trust and legal guardianship of my sons.

Lina was twenty-four, a nursing student working three jobs at once. She spoke in a soft voice, blended into the background, and never asked for a raise. She only asked for one thing: permission to sleep in the twins’ nursery.

Clara despised her. “She’s a slacker,” she muttered one night at dinner. “I saw her sitting in the dark for hours doing nothing. And who knows… maybe she’s stealing Aurelia’s jewelry when you’re not looking. You should watch her.”

The Surveillance

Fueled by grief and Clara’s poisonous whispers, I spent $100,000 installing state-of-the-art infrared cameras throughout the house. I didn’t tell Lina. I wanted proof.

For two weeks, I avoided looking at the footage, burying myself in work. But on a rainy Tuesday, at three in the morning, unable to sleep, I opened the secure feed on my tablet.

I expected to see her sleeping. I expected to find her rummaging through my things. What I saw knocked the wind out of me.

The night-vision footage showed Lina sitting on the floor between the two cribs. She wasn’t resting. She was holding Mateo, the frail twin, skin-to-skin against her chest—just as Aurelia used to do to regulate a baby’s breathing. But that wasn’t the most shocking part.

The camera picked up a gentle, constant movement. Lina rocked slowly while humming a melody: the exact lullaby Aurelia had composed for the twins before she died. It had never been published. No one else in the world should have known it.

Then, the nursery door opened.

Clara walked in, holding a small silver dropper. She headed straight for Samuel’s crib—the healthy twin—and began to squeeze a clear liquid into his bottle.

Lina stood up immediately, clutching Mateo protectively. Her voice, soft but steel-firm, cut through the audio feed.

“Stop it, Clara. I already swapped the bottles. You’re giving him just water now. The sedative you’ve been dosing Mateo with to make him appear sickly? I found the vial in your vanity yesterday.”

Family Games

The tablet shook in my hands.

“You’re nothing but hired help,” Clara spat. “No one will believe you. Damian thinks Mateo’s condition is genetic. As soon as he’s declared unfit, I get custody, the assets, everything… and you disappear.”

“I am not just an employee,” Lina replied, stepping forward. She pulled an old, worn locket from under her apron. “I was the nursing student on duty the night Aurelia died. I was the last person she spoke to.”

Her voice cracked.

“She told me you tampered with her IV. She knew you wanted the Blackwood name. Before she died, she made me swear that if she didn’t survive, I would find her children. I spent two years changing my name and my appearance just to get into this house and keep them safe from you.”

Clara lunged at her.

I didn’t wait another second.

I sprinted down the hallway, fury burning in my veins. I burst into the nursery just as Clara raised her hand to strike Lina. I didn’t scream. I simply caught her wrist in a vice grip and looked her dead in the eye.

“The cameras are recording in high definition, Clara. And the police are already at the gate.”

When Silence Spoke

The true ending didn’t come with Clara in handcuffs, though that certainly happened. It came an hour later, when the house finally fell quiet.

I sat on the nursery floor, exactly where Lina had been. For the first time in two years, I didn’t look at my sons as problems to be solved, but as living pieces of the woman I loved.

“How did you know the song?” I asked, my voice broken.

Lina sat beside me, gently resting her hand on Mateo’s head. He wasn’t crying. For the first time in his life, he was sleeping peacefully.

“She sang it to them every night in the hospital,” she whispered. “Aurelia said that as long as they heard that melody, they would know their mother was still watching over them. I just… I didn’t want the song to end.”
