Three years into our marriage, my husband and I were still deeply in love, our bond passionate and strong. However, one day, he surprised me with a serious look on his face and said, “I want to sleep alone for a while.” Those words struck me like lightning. For any woman, such a statement can feel like a betrayal, and I was no exception. I was left speechless, my heart racing as a wave of emotions crashed over me.
I cried, I got angry, and I desperately tried to resist his decision, but he remained resolute. After a prolonged struggle, feeling utterly powerless, I had no choice but to concede. Yet, the unease lingered within me. I couldn’t shake the nagging thoughts: “Is he seeing someone else?” “Has he grown tired of me?” These fears gnawed at me day and night, robbing me of my appetite and sleep.
One evening, while my husband was out, I made a bold decision. Driven by a mix of curiosity and desperation, I hired a worker to create a small hole, no bigger than a thumb, in the corner of the wall separating our bedrooms. The next night, with my heart pounding in my chest, I pressed my eye against the hole, trembling with anxiety about what I might discover.
What I saw nearly made me faint. In the room, there was no other woman. Instead, my husband was kneeling amidst candles and incense, holding an old photograph. His eyes were swollen from tears as he whispered the name of a woman, sobbing like a lost child. The woman in the photo was not a stranger; it was his late wife, captured on their wedding day. She had passed away five years prior.
In that moment, I realized that his desire to sleep alone was not a sign of infidelity but rather a silent yearning to reconnect with memories of a first love he had never truly let go. I slid down the wall until I was sitting on the floor, tears streaming down my face. My anger evaporated, replaced by a profound sadness intertwined with compassion. I understood that I had been sharing my life with a heart that had never fully belonged to me.
As I sat there, my hands resting on the edge of the hole, my soul felt torn apart by the image of my husband kneeling before the portrait of his deceased wife. I had feared another woman, a potential affair, but the reality was that my rival was a relic of the past. I had once hoped that he would turn to me with genuine love and fidelity, but I learned that some wounds and emotions cannot be replaced.
I was merely a visitor in a home whose heart had already been sealed by yesterday. That night, I returned to my own room, buried my face in the pillow, and cried until I was out of tears. I was no longer angry with him; instead, I felt compassion for myself—a woman who had given her youth to a heart that had no space for her.
In the following days, I continued with my daily routines: cooking, cleaning, and washing. However, I stopped waiting for hugs or sincere words. I lived in silence, observing, contemplating, and preparing for my decision. One morning, I placed the divorce papers on the table where he was sipping his coffee. When he picked them up, his eyes widened in shock.

I offered him a weak but determined smile and said, “Now I understand, darling. I must not cling to a heart that was never mine. I’m leaving so you can live your life freely.” He stood frozen for a long moment, trembling hands and reddened eyes, but ultimately, he said nothing to stop me.
As I finally left that house, my bag felt light, but my heart was heavy with pain. It was filled with love, sorrow, and longing, yet I felt lighter because I knew I had made the right decision: I had freed us both.
Looking ahead, I resolved to lead a different life—one where my heart would no longer hide in the shadows. I vowed to learn to value myself, and when the time was right, I would seek a pure love, one destined solely for me, a love that would not be shared with memories or ghosts of the past. This time, I promised myself I would never lose myself again.
